THE EMS FOUNDATION AND WILD LAW INSTITUTE COMMENT ON THE REVISED DRAFT WHITE PAPER ON THE CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE USE OF SOUTH AFRICA’S BIODIVERSITY

The EMS Foundation and the Wild Law Institute submitted joint comments on the Revised Draft White Paper on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity on the 11th November 2022.

Most of the detailed comments were submitted in relation to the first Draft White Paper submitted on the 10th September 2022 remain relevant, the EMS Foundation and the WildLaw Institute have, hereby, avoided repeating these in this submission except where the comments are critical.

Both organisations strongly support the aspects of the Revised White Paper that reflect a progressive vision and policy for conservation based on the ethic of UBUNTU and the recognition that humanity can only flourish in the long-term by conserving the natural systems that support all life. Both submitted specific comments in an effort to strengthen the Revised Draft White Paper and eliminate some internal inconsistencies.

The purpose of this submission is to draw attention to what the EMS Foundation and the WildLaw Institute regard as the main issues, so that they are not obscured amidst the detailed comments and overlooked.
