EMS FOUNDATION ADDITIONAL INPUT TO CITES SECRETARIAT FOLLOWING CITES TIGER MEETING WITH STAKEHOLDERS IN SOUTH AFRICA

“The EMS Foundation notes with concern the current welfare violations and health and wellbeing implications for tigers (and other big cats) held in captivity in South Africa as well as the obvious safety concerns for humans and the unacceptable conditions, workers in the industry face.

When in 2016 the EMSF asked the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment if they have conducted a verifiable audit on tigers including ligers, tigons which are all being bred fr commercial purpose, they consistently replied that they have not as they are ‘exotics’ and thereof it is not their responsibility. This despite the fact that they are CITES Appendix I animals and that tigers are covered by our environmental legislation.”
