RISE AND DINE WORKING TOGETHER TO END CHILDHOOD HUNGER

THE EMS FOUNDATION AND THE LUNCH-BOX FUND

The EMS Foundation is delighted to announce a partnership agreement with the Lunchbox Fund.

The EMS Foundation and Shambala Private Game Reserve have provided the infrastructure for the establishment of food gardens at four schools in and around Vaalwater in the fertile Waterberg region of Limpopo Province of South Africa.  The talented gardeners tend to the gardens to produce organic vegetables from these food gardens which provide delicious, fresh, organic ingredients all year.

Kitchen staff at the four schools use these ingredients to make nutritious meals for the children and teachers.  The vegetables that are not utilised by staff for the meals are taken home by the pupils and any surplus is sold or given to members of and or family of the school communities.

The Patron and Executive Director of the EMS Foundation, Elizabeth Steyn and Michele Pickover, decided, after visiting all the schools this year, that they wanted to provide an additional meal for the children at these schools.

The EMS Foundation took the decision to enter into an agreement with the Lunchbox Fund in May 2023.  The Lunch-Box Fund was founded by South African born, Topaz Page-Green in 2005. The successful non-profit organisation has successfully fostered education through nutrition in townships and rural areas of South Africa.

The Lunch-Box Fund and the EMS Foundation share the same philosophy of providing breakfast and lunch to vulnerable and food insecure children in South Africa.  The provision of these encourages the children to attend school and the benefit of the nutritious meals encourages the children to concentrate and learn.

Funded by the EMS Foundation, the Lunch-Box Fund will deliver the ingredients to the four schools where the staff will prepare a daily breakfast for the children. Children need to refuel their bodies and minds for the day ahead. Studies show that children who eat breakfast at school have improved attendance, behaviour and academic performance. The EMS Foundation is thrilled at this positive development and look forward to working with the schools and the Lunch Box Fund.
